Actress Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) had been casted in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as Mary Jane, and even filmed her part in the movie not too long along. But audience members will not be seeing her portrayal anytime soon, it seems, for the character has been axed from the movie. The character won’t be appearing until the third installment.  And, it may have been recast too.

From the beginning, it has been reported that the actress would only be making a brief appearance in the new film. So, her scenes being nixed will not have a huge impact on the final film. Whether her scenes will be held until the third film has yet to be determined, but from the potential look of things, it seems very unlikely that that will be the case.

Rumor has it that the character may be recast in the new film due to the actress’s upcoming commitments. Woodley is currently filming a role in the upcoming Divergent, based on a YA novel that could become a new franchise. She also has an adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars set to film this August. She’ll next be seen in The Spectacular Now.

Marc Webb, the director of the film, has stated his reason for the cut to The Hollywood Reporter as such:

“I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.”

Woodley has also spoken to Entertainment Weekly about her cut:

“Of course I’m bummed,” she said. “But I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason….based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film.”

The Amazing Spider- Man 2 is still filming, and set to be released on May 2, 2014.
