It seemed inevitable, but Robert Downey Jr. has just signed a deal to return as Tony Stark/Iron Man in both The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3. But, in some kind-of surprising news, the deal does not include Downey Jr. returning for Iron Man 4.
Downey Jr.’s multi-picture contract just ended not to long ago, when Iron Man 3 was finished and released into theaters. The discussion of the future of Iron Man has been a heavily discussed, particularly because Downey Jr. himself has said that he is only planning on playing the character for a couple more years. Rumors were being spread that Iron Man may be played by another actor in either an upcoming Iron Man film or in The Avengers sequel. But it appears that these ideas have just been put to rest, for now.
This news, however, does mean that Iron Man 4 will not be a part of Marvel’s Phase 3. Which is particularly interested, especially given that the latest sequel just happens to be the fourth highest grossing domestic film of all time. This does mean, however, that the character has the potential to die in the third Avengers film. But would Marvel really do that? Also, this deal leaves the room open for Downey Jr. to return in a cameo in the other Marvel features.
