Box Office: ‘The Wolverine’ is the Big Winner

To the surprise of no one, The Wolverine has won the number one spot for the weekend box office.

The superhero movie was able to get $55 million over the weekend. Which isn’t terrible, but is a bit disappointing compared to the $85 million that X-Men Origins: Wolverine was able to gain on its opening. This total is about the same as what X-Men: First Class opened with, but that movie didn’t have the benefit of 3-D sales, so…yeah.

Meanwhile, last week’s winner, The Conjuring, opened in second this weekend with $22 million. Other notable mentions include Grown Ups 2 becoming the 14th Adam Sandler-movie to bypass the $100 million point, earning $101.6 million domestically thus far, and Fruitvale Station breaking into the tenth spot in its wide release over the weekend with $4.6 million.

Meanwhile, in limited release, Woody Allen’s latest Blue Jasmine opened in six theaters in New York and Los Angeles over the weekend and was able to earn $612,000. With a $102,128 per theater average (PTA), this is both the best PTA of the year, and of Woody Allen’s career, thus far.

Next week sees the releases of The Smurfs 2 and 2 Guns, as well as The Spectacular Now and the Lindsay Lohan-feature The Canyons in limited release. I would say it’s between The Wolverine and The Smurfs 2, but, of course, we’ll have to see next week.
