This has been a pretty great week for trailers, between the teaser for the final episodes of Breaking Bad and the trailers for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, American Hustle and even Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa. It’s the shame that one of last for the week doesn’t live up to those standards.
The first trailer for Academy Award winning screenwriter Diablo Cody’s (Juno) directorial debut Paradise came out today, and I can’t say that it looks that great. It certainly has a good cast, between Julianne Hough, Russell Brand, Octavia Spencer, Nick Offerman and Holly Hunter. But the film’s potential for darker material seems to be subsided for a broad, sitcom-like style, even in the writing.
This seems to be more of Cody’s inexperience as a director more than anything else. But, of course, it’s still too early to tell for sure. This could just be a poorly made trailer, and I hope that’s just the case, because I want the talent here to make a good film.
The movie comes out on DirectTV on August 8 and in theaters on October 18.
