Last week, I guessed that either The Smurfs 2 or The Wolverine would be this week’s winner. I guess I underestimated the power of Denzel Washington’s box office draw, as his newest movie, 2 Guns, took the number one spot this weekend with $27.3 million.
The Washington/Mark Wahlberg action/comedy’s number one debut is pretty impressive, given that the R-rated movie was able to beat the kid-friendly The Smurfs 2, which was released on the same week. The sequel came in third place over the weekend, earning $18.2 million, which is about half of what the original opened with, $35.6 million, back in 2011. But it appears that the film is still doing pretty well overseas, as it has so far gained $52.5 million from 43 international markets.
This makes The Smurfs 2 grand total so far $80.2 million. Given that the last film only had 25% of its $563.7 million gross found domestically, this may not be as bad of news for Sony as it originally looked. I’m not sure what this says for the upcoming The Smurfs 3, being planned for a 2015 release, though.
Last week’s winner The Wolverine came in second place over the weekend, earning $21.7 million. This makes the superhero movie’s total domestic gross $95 million thus far. The film still has a little ways to go still before it can make back its $120 million budget.
Finally, in limited release, the critically-acclaimed The Spectacular Now opened in limited release over the weekend in four theaters, and earned $200,181.
Next weekend is looking pretty crowded, with Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and We’re the Millers on Wednesday, followed by Elysium, Planes and, in limited release, Lovelace on Friday. My money would be on Planes being the winner. But, given how wrong I was last week, you may be better off listening to someone else.
