Actor Paul Reubens has been hoping to bring his iconic creation Pee-Wee Herman back to the big screen for the past couple years. He’s been at work on a script, which has gone through a number of rewrites between himself and Paul Rust, and has locked down a producer with Judd Apatow. But it’s been some time since we’ve heard about any progress on the film—until now.
During press rounds for The Smurfs 2, Ruebens revealed to the LA Times that not only is the project still happening, but a director has been chosen, and financing and the script have been set in place. Reubens didn’t disclose who the director was, but he did reveal that the plan is to hopefully start filming the movie next year.
Along with talk of the upcoming movie, Reubens also provided some more details about the new Pee-Wee show that he is making. He promises that an “imminent” announcement relating to the project and an air date will be given in 2014.
He stated that, “short of something unforeseen like the studio going out of business, I think it’s very likely both these projects will happen next year.” I can only speak for myself, but I’m looking forward to seeing another big screen adventure from Pee-Wee. Here’s hoping this thing finally comes together.
