Stephen Frears has made some great films in his days. To highlight on a few, High Fidelity remains a favorite of mine, and 2006’s The Queen is truly a fantastic movie. Unfortunately, this was also his last great film, at least to date.
Hopefully, he’ll be able to change things around again with his next feature, Philomena. Starring Academy Award-winner Judi Dench and Steve Coogan (who co-wrote the script), the film has gained some Oscar buzz, mainly for Dench’s performance, and the first trailer was released today.
I’m liking what I’m seeing so far from this trailer. It doesn’t quite look great, a bit too sentimental so far for me, but Dench and Coogan look like they have good chemistry together and there’s a simple sweetness to this that’s very appealing.
Philomena will soon be playing at the Toronto Film Festival and at the Venice Film Festival. While slated for a November 1 release date in the U.K., there’s no official U.S. release at this time.
