As good as the U.S. Office is, the U.K. one is even better. And a big part of that is Ricky Gervais’ character David Brent, who is the Michael Scott of the show. While it could definitely be argued that he’s a less likeable character than Michael, his subtle mannerisms and ways of delivery will keep you cracking up with each re-viewing.
Gervais recently brought back his character on YouTube with the short The Office Revisited and the music video “Equality Street,” which he did for the charity Comic Relief, and then later with the YouTube series Learn Guitar with David Brent. But, as it turns out, this is just the beginning of where he wants to take the character in the future.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gervais is hoping the web series “will be the basis for a movie about Brent trying to make it in the music industry.” Gervais is even hoping to sign a record deal for Brent, with the actor appearing in character at various charity shows later this year.
I’m not sure if this is going to take a typical movie route, like Steve Coogan did earlier this year in the U.K. with his character Alan Partridge in Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa or will take the Borat-type route. But, either way, this does sound interesting.
It’s yet to be determined whether this will come together, but, for now, Gervais will next been seen on his new series Derek next month on Netflix, followed by Muppets Most Wanted next year.
Here’s one web episode of Learn Guitar with David Brent.
