After years of rumors and speculation about when the long-promised Arrested Development movie was going to get made, Netflix came in and allowed the show to live on…as a fourth season. But now that that is done, will the show go on to make that movie, or will it just stay the course as a show? The answer appears to be both.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Mitch Hurwitz, the creator of the show, said that he was currently writing a script for a movie of Arrested Development, and he plans to develop that, then make a fifth season.
He said the following:
“I can’t get into much more detail because I don’t want to scare anybody off. I don’t want to be presumptuous about it. I don’t own the property outright – it’s a 20th Century Fox property. But everybody seems really into it and really eager to make a movie.”
He also said:
“I’m hoping it happens as soon as possible. But I want to be very careful about not putting out false information. I want to get a time and tell everybody when it’s happening and not play with people. Right now, I’m trying to do something else for Netflix and a movie project and things. I’m always sort of superstitious about talking about this stuff before it happens. It’s the best way to guarantee it doesn’t happen.”
The biggest reason why he wants to make the movie over another season is because a movie is a “six-month commitment” whereas a movie can be “very doabl(y)” done in “four to five weeks.” He had a lot of issues getting the whole cast together for the fourth season, which was ultimately made through CGI and camera trickery to make it seem like everyone was there at the same time when they weren’t. A movie would be much easier for getting the whole cast available and together to shoot.
Personally, I would rather the show live on as a movie before another season, at least if it’s going to be like season four. While I enjoyed the fourth season well enough, the chemistry the cast shared together was often notably missing. A movie with everyone together should fix that up just fine.
