As people are still trying to get over the fact that Ben Affleck is going to be Batman (I think this is the fourth time I’ve started an article this way…) another superhero movie has landed a major role. It has been revealed today that James Spader will be playing Ultron in the upcoming sequel, The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Marvel.com revealed the casting in a press release earlier today. Spader is best known for his performances on shows such as Boston Legal and The Practice. He’s also set to star in the upcoming NBC series The Blacklist later this fall. It’s not certain whether he is just providing his voice, or if he is going to be doing motion capture, like Mark Ruffalo did for the Hulk in the last movie.
I think it’s safe to say that this was not a casting report that many people predicted, but I don’t think that should be of any real concern. Spader’s performance in last year’s Lincoln was, undoubtedly, one of the highlights of the film, and the actor has proven time and time again that he is capable of giving strong performances. Here’s hoping him the best in this high-profile role.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to be released on May 1, 2015.
