Palo Alto struck me as one of those books that a writer writes just to write. More than anything else, it felt like writing a book was something James Franco needed to add to his insane resume, so he wrote up some short stories and got the book published.
Because the book was written by a celebrity, it was turned into a movie. And, as a first trailer is released, I must admit: it actually looks kinda good. A little pretentious, and also a little too self-aware perhaps, but there is something here that feels somewhat authentic at the same time. Plus, there are some very beautiful shots in here too.
I can’t say that it’s going to be a good movie, but it certainly looks like it’ll be a mildly interesting one. I’ll have to see it when it comes out. It doesn’t have an official release yet, but it is set to premiere at the Telluride Film Festival this weekend.
