As anticipated, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 was this week’s winner at the box office, opening with $35 million.
Considering the first’s $30.3 debut, this is a step up, but not quite the numbers that some people were expecting. It didn’t make the same bank as last year’s Hotel Transylvania, which got $42.5 million in its opening. But, compared to its competition, it did pretty well.
In second place is last week’s winner, Prisoners, pulling in $11.2 million. With a domestic total of $38.9 million, the film seems to make its way toward earning back its $46 million budget.
Meanwhile, the other new films of the weekend, Rush, Don Jon and Baggage Claim, had varying success. The Ron Howard film came in third, earning $10.3 million. Behind it was Baggage Claim in fourth, earning $9.3 million. Then, after that, the Joseph Gordon Levitt directorial debut came in fifth with $9 million.
Coming out next week is Gravity, Runner Runner and, in limited release, Parkland. I really, really hope Gravity is going to be the winner, but we’ll find out if it is next week.
