Marvel Netflix Shows Could Lead to Movies; Another ABC Marvel Show Brewing

By Will Ashton

Yesterday, it was revealed that Netflix will be hosting not one, not two, not three, but four different Marvel shows in 2015. Those superheroes, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, will eventually be working their ways towards becoming The Defenders in a mini-series, but, should they stay successful, they may be having a bigger calling, according to Jay Rasulo, Senior Executive VP and CFO of the Walt Disney Company.

In a Disney earnings conference call yesterday, Rasulo noted, “Marvel has thousands of characters…and it is not possible to mine them all with filmed entertainment. While these characters are attractive characters they are not among the most popular… it’s not likely we would have made feature films about them…though if they are popular on Netflix, they could become feature films.”

So, essentially, Marvel is using Netflix as testing grounds for some of their uncertain characters. In addition to this, however, he went on to reveal that, in addition to these four shows and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D on ABC, there is another show being developed for the syndicated network.

He noted:

“We actually talked about making these series available to others. And there was quite a bit of interest for these properties in the marketplace. The answer is yes, we will as a company, create more original programming for platforms that are not ours. We have some great networks with ABC, ABC Family, The Disney Channel, not to mention ESPN and Life but they’re not going to buy original, scripted programming for a while. But we can sell just so much programming from Marvel, we’ve got a good show in S.H.I.E.L.D. and another one being developed for ABC- more plans on our Disney channel with Marvel, but this seemed to be a great opportunity and I think there will be other opportunities on other platforms to do some more things.”

So, there you have it. In addition to all the shows DC is making, Marvel is making even more. At this rate, there will be about 335344 different superhero shows running at the same time. I just hope at least one of them will be good.
