Universal Studios has decided that it is a good idea to team up LeBron James, basketball superstar with no acting creditability, and Kevin Hart, the man who, when left too much to his own devices, goes way over the top, to be a movie together. It’s called Ballers. Oh yeah, in case you didn’t guess, this is going to be a comedy.
Now, it is not hard to see where their thinking is coming from. It doesn’t really go farther than James is very tall and Hart is short, with James being the straight man to Hart’s wackiness. I can see the trailer already and it looks pretty awful.
Deadline reports that he script will be written by Hart and his writing partners, Joey Wells, Chris Spencer and Harry Ratchford. As soon as they turn in their final script, the studio is going to go search for a director. Production is supposed to start next summer during James’ off-season.
Apparently, this project has been in the making for a while, with James looking to star in his feature debut and bring some crossover appeal to his career. It’s easy to compare this to Michael Jordan in Space Jam, because, well, that’s pretty much what he’s trying to do.
I don’t think I could be less excited for a film.
Hart will next be seen Grudge Match on Christmas day, Ride Along on January 17, About Last Night on February 14 and Think Like a Man Too on June 20.
